Grommets on 26 May

Postby carolet » Fri Mar 05, 2010 3:25 pm

Aaaaag not a huge suprise but had ENT appt at Addenbrookes this morning and Molly has been booked in
to have grommets fitted on 26 May :( Not a huge thing compared to other op's but this will be number 5.

Not looking foward to it as she will be sooooo much more aware this time, wasnt really understanding everything
before (all done before her 2nd birthday). She had her preschool jabs and swine flu jab in the last month and each time
I mention doctors she says/signs "no medicine" and grabs her arm, bless. So she is not going to be impressed by anaesthetic, she always
fights like mad anways - took 4 of us to hold her down for her heart op.

Soooo any hints/tips for post grommet fitting, let me know. They've assured me they should be able to fit them, as last time they tried
her tubes where toooo tiny, still small and apparantly bendy(!) but he is confident he can get them in - he'd better or there'll be trouble :|

Hugs to all
Carole

Carole, Sorry to hear the little love needs another op. What is the actual reason she is having them put in, is it for her hearing, or for infections or another reason. I have to admit my head is spinning at the moment, Doruk has had an ear infection that we just can't shift and grommits (or Tup) as they are in Turkey have been mentioned. Is this the best option? Suggestions greatly appreciated from any of you.

oh carole i know its not nice facing another op but grommits arent too bad. She will probably be home the same day. Quite a few of my friends kids have had them done and the little girl in the bed next to campbell when he had his tonsils out was practically doing summersaults on the way out - almost as soon as she woke up which was really good. Post op one thing my best friends little girl jumped atwas "normal" noises that she wasnt expecting cos she hadnt heard them clearly before and thought the kettle, tv, washing machine etc was too noisey! She also continued with the SALT as she hadnt learnt to focus on sounds and interpret them - even though she could hear she had to learn to hear if you see what I mean. Anyway good luck - i think half of your stress is in the anticipations of mollys reaction!

hi carole,
sorry to hear molly's got to go in again, can't really help on the advice front, as ours was part of cleft op, although think it is usually done as day surgery, and must admit we have had no problems with Becky's, we even take her swimmming (just not under water and she ahs to have one of those sexy headbands) although some consultants prefer it if you don't....

is it worth asking nursery to do any role play? get her in mood?

Oh poor Molly and poor you. There's no easy way to get around the anaesthetic situation.....I guess that talking about it with her lots and role play may help, but I'm sure that it won't be popular anyway :( . At least it is only a minor op and the results will be immediate, but still...
I got Louise a nurses costume recently from M&S for a tenner, and she really likes the Maisy book "Maisy Goes to Hospital". We're getting less 'Dr, No, bandages" signs from her now and it has progressed to "Dr, bandages, teddy", so maybe play would help Molly? There are cheap toy first aid kits on Amazon just now which I spied...
I really hope that Molly's ear canals are suitable now.
I know that its a few weeks off, but I'll be thinking of you all.

Oh boo, sorry to hear that Molly needs another op. Will keep my fingers crossed everything goes okay. Sorry I don't know much about grommets. Andrew's cousin's little boy had them and he was out the same day and fine afterwards but that's as much as I know about them.

HI Ladies,
Sorry for the late reply, been a bit hectic at home.

Molly will only be in for the day, morning/lunchtime surgery and out that afternoon/evening so not a big thing. We know she generally comes
round well from the anaesthetics so not really worried on that front, its just being a mum and worrying how she will react to something scary
Ironically been watching the new Something Special programmes and in one of them a little boy goes into hospital to have an operation on his
poorly ear!!! Both Dave and I pulled faces when they showed the mask on his face eeeeek.

Kerri - its because of her hearing that they are fitting grommets. She's had glue ear almost constantly but until fairly recently not enough to affect
her hearing but now it is quite dramatically. Speech and Langauage are also convinced that her hearing has been down in the past and affected her
speech patterns, so quite keen to get it cleared up. Her hearing loss is at the lower frequencys so deep/low noises so it will be interesting to see how
she reacts afterwards.

Thanks for all your replies
Hgs

Carole,

It was 20 years ago now so not sure if much use but my many occasions of having grommets put in were not at all scary and I was a very sensitive easily scared child ( hard to believe now!) There always used to be the "tiny pin prick in back of a hand already numbed with cream" option for those scared of the mask and when they do use the mask they can bring it slowly and discreetly up the body until so the child doesn't see it coming and is mostly asleep before it gets near the face. Would it be possible to ask about these osrts of things before you go or discreetly on arrival?

Good luck anyway!

Thanks Ruth, Molly has been "put under" using both the mask and via the canula in her hand previously, but like i say she had all
her previous op's before her 2nd birthday. She is generally pretty unphased now by being poked and prodded so I hope she will be
same this time. I think the canula will probably be best if they can get in  but she has tended to be a bit of tube puller in the
past! I'll make sure they know she is a wriggler if they use the mask, as it was a horrible experience having to pin her down when she
had her heart op', the staff there werent very good on that occassion - after that she had a canula and then the mask and was fine.

So really just me

Oh Carole, i really feel for you! Paul fought the anaethestist when he went for his lip op and he only had to have it put onto his trachi - no scary masks! He batted at their hands/arms and fought going off to sleep. it took everything in my power not to pick him up and tell them to just leave him alone! when he went for his eye op he was drifting off to sleep when they put him under anyway so it was less traumatic for me!! here's hoping it's not too stressful for you this time - big hugs!! x

Hi

Please see my post about Hannas Helpline - you may be able to get it on Five TV's website - it was on Milkshake this morning. It might help?
